European Christian Democrats Stand Behind CPA in May Election

As voters go to the polls tomorrow, leading Christians in parliaments across Europe are rallying behind the Christian Peoples Alliance. Messages of support have come from Christian Democrat MPs in the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Hungary and Finland encouraging voters to help establish a direct voice in electoral politics for the social teachings of the Church.

Britain's first party of Christian Democratic inspiration has candidates running in every region of Scotland and Wales, together with local candidates in England. It draws its activists and support from across the denominations. Federal Party Leader, Michael Elmer said:

"We welcome this recognition and support from our European Christian Democratic friends. Britain is getting used to the idea of our party in British politics and our aim is to build on our vote on Thursday to establish Christian Democracy for the long-term."

Yves Leterme MP of the Flemish Christian Democrats and Minister-President of Flanders in Belgium said:

"The Christian Peoples Alliance stands within a tradition that has been familiar in Belgium for many years and it deserves to succeed. We trust it will make a breakthrough."

The Deputy Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Andre Rouvoet, who heads the Christian Unie party added:

"As a Christian-democratic party in the Netherlands, we have a long-standing relationship with the Christian Peoples Alliance. They have made a valuable contribution to Christian Democracy in Europe. We have met in the CPA a party with a mature programme and an honest concern for the well being of people. "

Dagfinn Høybråten, Leader of the Norwegian Christian Democrats said:

"As Christian Democrats we believe that there is a need for value-oriented parties that put emphasis on the infinite value of the human being, the importance of the family, compassion with the poor and a wise stewardship of the world's resources. We wish the Christian Peoples Alliance all the best!"

Leader of the Finnish Christian Democrats, Paivi Rasanen said:

"Christian Democrats in Finland wish all the best to de our sister party, CPA, for great success and many breakthroughs in the coming elections. "

Chairman of the Hungarian Foreign Affairs Committee and Vic-President of the main opposition FIDESZ party, Zsolt Nemeth MP added:

"Christian values underpin European integration. I firmly believe that if these values spread in the UK with the help of the Christian Peoples Alliance, this will be for the benefit of Welsh and Scottish society and for reconciliation within an enlarged Europe."

Mechthild Löhr, President of Christian Democrats for Life, in the governing CDU party of Germany said:

"We know that CPA is a wholly pro-life political party and it is of the greatest importance that it obtains representation at every level of British political life open to it. We pray for a successful outcome in the elections."

Alf Svensson, former Leader of the Swedish Christian Democrats and government minister added:

"Christian Democrats don't have a monopoly of truth but underline and stress more than any other party the necessity of values. I wish from the bottom of my heart for a successful election result for the Christian Democrats of the UK."
