Welsh Christian Democrats Establish Presence in National Politics

Speaking after the count in Cardiff for elections to the National Assembly of Wales, National Spokesman for the Christian Peoples Alliance Cymru, Anthony Jeremy, thanked voters who backed the party on the regional list votes. Across Wales, candidates standing in each of the five regions won votes from 2694 people.

Anthony Jeremy, a solicitor from Cardiff, commented:

"Christian Democracy has now fought its first electoral contest in Wales. In just a short 100 day campaign, we have made our presence known and been the means for those who want to see the Christian roots of Welsh culture and democracy restored and renewed. No leaflets were delivered through the free Post office mailshot, nor did we qualify either for coverage on the broadcast media or an election broadcast, but it was important to give that choice to voters."

"As CPA Cymru looks ahead to local and European elections, our message to the people of Wales is, 'If you share our goals and want Christianity to guide Welsh values and public policy, why not come and join us?' This result is not the end: this is the day of small beginnings. We build from here."

Reader in the Church of Wales and lead candidate in the northern region, Brian Churchill added:

"For too long, the Christian contribution in Wales to tackling poverty, building community and instilling values has been ignored by politicians and the media. By standing in this first contest, we have started to reverse this trend. But we now need the help of all those disenfranchised by the current secular parties. We welcome them on board to help us make the difference."
